Basic Sailing 101
Learn to sail a 23-foot sailboat.
 
 
Classes Held May through September       

No previous experience necessary. 

Weekend Classes- This is a three-day course meeting on Saturday and Sunday, plus the following Saturday from 9:30 to 5:00 pm.

Weekday Classes- start on a Wednesday and end on Friday. 9:30 to 5:00 pm.

Holiday Classes- Meet Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Holidays are Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends. 9:30 to 5 pm.

The first day of this ASA 3-day course begins in the classroom followed by on-the-water instruction for the remainder of the course until the written exam. An hour break for lunch each day.  Our years of experience teaching have proven that learned control and time on the water create a confident sailor.

This course includes:

  • 16 hours instruction plus 8 hours of practice sailing.

  • Three students per boat (subject to change).

  • Practice sails after completing the class.

  • Textbook and American Sailing Association certification.

  • A fleet of day sailboats to sail, after completing the course.  

Successful completion of the BK 101 course results in ASA certification. If you have difficulty, no worries; we will give you additional help to meet the ASA requirements.

Free Bonus! After you've successfully completed the course, return for 2 free 4-hour (9 am-1 pm) practice sails on the boat you learned on. Practice sails must be completed within two weeks after successfully completing the course and with fellow classmates or experienced sailing school skippers.  No children under 16 years of age allowed aboard.

Need someone to sail with after the course? Just ask, and will be glad to refer you to other sailors after you complete the course. Don't be fooled by other schools that don't allow you to sail their boats after completing their sailing class.

Harlem Yacht Club- City Island NY 

Learn to sail classes are also offered on Sundays at the Harlem Yacht Club in City Island, NY.

Classes meets for three consecutive Sundays 9:30- 5 pm. Membership not required. The club has club owned Catalina 25 boats available for students that complete the sailing class and join the club.  LEARN MORE

Refresher Lesson 

If it has been a while since you have sailed and need to refresh your skills this take this 3 hour lesson. Lessons available in the spring. Students will practice rigging, points of sail and mooring pickups on a 23 foot boat with no auxiliary motor.  Book now to see available dates on the calendar. 

Coastal Cruising 103

Offered in New York or winters in St Thomas                               

 

With Basic Sailing Skills BK 101 as a prerequisite, students will sail aboard a 40 to a 43-foot sailboat with two to three other students aboard. The two-day weekday evening course or weekend day course is spent aboard the boat and underway.

  • Practice docking, anchoring, sailing, and emergency procedures

  • Understand the systems aboard a cruising boat with an auxiliary inboard engine

In NY, all weekday classes are held from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Weekend classes are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.                      

Maximum of  (3) persons per class.   Successful completion of the Coastal Cruising course results in American Sailing Association (ASA) Certification.

Bring a snack and drink. Written exam for certification scheduled later at student's convenience.

 

This course is also available in the winter as a seven day, live aboard sailing class in the Caribbean.

Bareboat Chartering 104

Winter Class offered in the Caribbean                                   

Learn to skipper your own bareboat charter in a week! Upon successful completion of this course, you will be qualified to skipper, crew, or charter a boat for an extended cruise. Learn the ropes: provisioning, navigation, cruising boat systems, and planning a trip are among the many topics covered. Course fee includes (2) ASA certifications. Certifications available during this 7 day live aboard class are ASA 101, 103.104.105 and 106. Breakfast, lunch and two dinners are included too. Additional dinners are on your own at shore side restaurants on St Thomas or St Johns. Passports are not required for US citizens visiting the US Virgin Islands territory.        

Classes start in January. You arrive on a Sunday afternoon and depart the next Saturday a 12 noon. Boat departs from Crown Bay in St Thomas and sails to bays in St Thomas and St Johns. Non-sailors are welcome too! Read more about this great seven-day Winter Sailing Experience in the Caribbean.

Coastal Navigation105 

No prerequisites, no sailing skills required

 

No prerequisites. No sailing skills required, open to anyone. The course provides you with navigation theory required to operate a boat in coastal waters. This includes: converting courses between true and magnetic, determining drift, taking bearings, working with light lists, and more.

A take-home study.

No prerequisites.

Learn to sail a Laser or Zuma sailboat in Echo Bay. Meets 3 weekend Saturdays, 9:30 to 1pm. Instructors are coaches for the Junior Sailing program. You will get wet, so wear a bathing suite and bring a towel. Showers are located in the marina bathrooms.

Advanced Coastal Cruising 106

Prerequisites, 103, 104. Winter class in the Caribbean.

 

This class is offered on our 7-day liveaboard classes in St Thomas USVI. Classes start in January. You will sail a Dufour 43 and complete the ASA requirements that include nighttime sailing, emergency repairs, nighttime MOB recovery, anchor in the dark, identifying lights of another vessel, and more. Fee: Included in Bareboat charter course listed above.  

Private Lessons                                                                                                   

If you would like the benefit of the accelerated learning that individual attention can provide, private lessons are an excellent option. The lesson can be scheduled to best meet your free time. Whatever your focus is -- advanced racing techniques, docking, mooring pickup, anchoring, or a refresher class -- we have experienced instructors to handle your needs.  Three hours (3 ) of instruction.
